What is Botox?

Anti-wrinkle injections are commonly referred to as ‘Botox’, short for Botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin can be injected into humans in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, effectively leaving the muscles without instructions to contract, therefore ‘freezing’ them. In addition, it is used to treat over 20 different medical conditions including excessive sweating, over active bladder and migraines.

Before and After Picture of BotoxBotox injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or by blocking certain nerves. It is the treatment of choice for people who have dynamic forehead lines, frown lines or wrinkles around their eyes, which they wish to reduce. Results will begin to show between 7-14 days following treatment and can last between 3-4 months typically. The most common side effects are generally mild and temporary and can include pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. The treatment involves a series of injections into the muscles on the face and must be administered by a fully qualified medical professional. Most patients report only a mild discomfort. The whole procedure time is approximately 30 minutes, however the injection process itself only takes several minutes. Clients can return to work immediately but they should refrain from exercise, saunas, sunbeds and alcohol for 24 hours.

The aim is for a natural, more youthful look (not the frozen look) unless desired by the client.

Botox may not be suitable for all clients and they may wish to consider other treatments such as dermal fillers and derma-rollers.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers consist of a gel that naturally occurs in the body called hyaluronic acid. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat causing sagging, lines and wrinkles.

Filler is used to smooth out wrinkles and folds caused by this loss of elasticity for a fresher, brighter look. This treatment is often used for the lower half of the face, such as the deep nose to mouth folds, marionette lines at the corner of the mouth and can also be used to enhance the shape or size of the lips or restore the natural shape of the lips that may have been lost with ageing.

The filler is broken down by the body over time; results are instant and generally lasting 6-12 months.

Derma Roller
Derma-roller is a natural way to improve the appearance of the skin and reverse the signs of aging, scarring, fine lines, stretch marks, acne spots and mild pigmentation. The roller consists of very fine needles, which achieve a controlled injury to dermis skin layer. This process stimulates skin renewal and collagen production for a rejuvenated, smooth and youthful complexion.

Derma RollerThe Derma-roller is available in different sizes dependent on the assessment of the skin. Treatment time is approximately 1 hour. Redness may be present for a few hours with the smaller derma-rollers and a few days with the larger sizes. It is recommended to have at least 3 treatments for maximum effect. Results begin to show after a few weeks and are long lasting.

Dermal fillers, Botox and Derma-roller can be used in conjunction with each other.
