Over future editions I will share further articles on the world of classic cars. I hope to give a broad and varied view of the classic car scene. If you would like to read about anything in particular, please email me at harry@jagxk.com
You could be forgiven for thinking that classic cars are museum or display pieces, to be admired but never used. While this is true of some super rare cars, and there are collectors who simply want cars to look at and polish, the vast majority of classic car owners get out and use their cars. The classic car world is full of enthusiasts who want to enjoy their cars as much as possible. Classic cars provide a driving experience that is completely lost in modern cars. Generally, older cars are light and nimble compared with modern vehicles. They offer a sense of connection to the road and the machine around you, which has been completely eradicated in today’s cars.
To many, the thought of driving an old and potentially unreliable classic car for many miles is not very appealing. As such, the classic car industry has developed many brilliant upgrades to make classics more reliable, comfortable, and usable. Electric cooling fans to prevent overheating, power steering to assist with manoeuvring, a five-speed gearbox for motorway cruising, or electronic ignition for reliability – there really is no end to the possibilities. These kinds of upgrades can reduce the amount of maintenance required, making classic suitable for novices with no mechanical experience. They can also greatly enhance practicality, safety and ultimately your enjoyment of driving a classic car. For me, front disc brakes and inertia seatbelts are a must for a practical classic.
If you’re thinking of getting into classic cars but are daunted by the idea that the car might be difficult to live with, it is worth considering what upgrades might make a classic more usable for you. Speak to clubs, visit shows and talk to your local classic car garage. Those within the community will be more than happy to share their wealth of knowledge with you and guide you towards the right car and upgrades for your lifestyle and budget.
