Forest of Bere Bowmen competition in memory of Keith Mills

Keith Mills was Forest of Bere Bowmen’s Records Officer and a national archery judge before he died in 2012. To honour Keith’s many years of service, FOBB held an annual shoot in his memory. His wife Gwen kindly donated a trophy which this year was competed for on Sunday 29 June.

Keith had proposed a new archery round - the Chester - to the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS), and, though it was never formally adopted, that is what the Forest Bowmen shoot for the annual memorial trophy. The shoot is decided on handicap, so everyone has an equal chance. [Editors note: A ‘Chester’ is a round of 12 dozen arrows, shot 4 dozen at each of three distances - for example at 60/50/40 yards.]

This year at last there was great weather for the competition - just the opposite of the Club’s Anniversary Challenge Tournament! So on the 29 June it was sunhats and white shirts - not anoraks and umbrellas.

Everyone had a go this year, from the more senior members (John Davis was up on the shooting line, despite having to use crutches to get there) right through to the Junior members.
