Sweet Times Ahead for Hayling Island!

Nowadays there are nail bars, singles bars and even speed-dating bars, but the first pancake and waffles bar in the area is coming to Hayling Island!

Kitt’s Sweet Times is the brainchild of Keith ‘Kitt’ Huddleston, who has been running a restaurant and café-bar in Mengham for the past eight years.

“I worked out recently that I have served up about 50,000 Full English breakfasts since coming here,” says Kitt, “and thought it was about time for a change!”

Different Dining Experience
Kitt gained his catering expertise as a food and beverage manager in the Merchant Navy, and got the idea for his new venture during a recent trip to New York . “People there love to try different tastes and are famously adventurous when it comes to eating what can be to us unusual combos. Times change, and I think Hayling is ready for a different dining experience.”

Competition
The emphasis at Sweet Times will be on variety of tastes and fillings for the sweet and savoury American-style stacked pancakes and waffles*, and offerings will include Transatlantic Breakfast Pancakes with smoked bacon, and a selection of themed waffles like the Bird’s Nest, which will offer sweet-toothed customers a combo of chocolate sauce, ice cream, candy floss and mini chocolate eggs!

“Virtually anything can go in or on a pancake or waffle,” explains Kitt, “ and the only limit is the imagination - within reason, of course! We have already had some pretty whacky ideas from friends and customers at the café bar, so I decided to mark the opening by running a competition to find a really unusual combo that could be a regular on the menu.”

All entrants have to do is send an e-mail with their chosen combo for pancakes or waffle fillings to kittssweettimes@gmail.com phone Kitt on 07585 758955 or drop their entries in to the Café bar at 18(a) Elm Grove, Mengham. The three most interesting, imaginative or even outrageous suggestions will win their senders and a guest a slap-up pancake and waffle feast at Sweet Times. “The more imaginative or unlikely the better,” says Kitt. “We have already had one suggestion for a pancake based on the sort of gruesome animal parts served up in the Bushtucker Trials in TV’s ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’, but I think that may be a bit extreme for Hayling diners!”

Marmite Shakes
Another theme at Sweet Times will be speciality milk shakes with, to say the least, some interesting flavours. One on the long list will be a Marmite Shake! “It remains to be seen whether the customers will like or hate the idea,” says Kitt.

Sweet Times opened in January, 2014. Regular customers and fans of Kitt’s other home-made specialities should not despair, as the famous Sunday Roast will stay on the menu together with a selection of more traditional offerings.

*According to the dictionary, a waffle is a ‘dough or batter mix, served plain or with variety of dressings in a distinctive patterned shape’.
