Hayling Celebrates 80th D-Day Anniversary

Over 1,000 people were transported by buses and walked to an event at the Hayling Ferry.

A static display of wartime jeeps and communications equipment, armaments and a display of boards showing Hayling’s wartime history were exhibited during the day illustrating the important part played throughout WWII but particularly leading up to D-Day.

The Royal Marine Association Concert Band performed a programme of music including the Hayling Young Stars. Keegan Featherstone delivered a poignant rendition of Empty Tables and Chairs from Les Miserable.   This was followed by the full ceremony of Sunset, lowering of flags as Hayling’s beacon was lit,

A wreath was laid by Mr Robert Jones a 100 year old veteran  commando who landed on Sword Beach as beach master.   Robert was wheeled in by cadets from 3rd Platoon Army Cadet Force Hayling and RAF Air Cadets 2327 (Havant) Squadron.

The Royal Marine Association Concert Band led the audience in a rousing rendition of Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory, finishing off the evening with a medley regimental marches.
