Havant Orchestra to perform in Hayling!

Saturday September 30th at 7.30 pm will see the Havant Symphony Orchestra performing at Hayling Island Community Centre with young conductor Tom Griffin, this year's holder of their Bob Harding Bursary for Student Conductors.

Tom came to the Orchestra from the Royal Marines School of Music in Portsmouth and now conducts one of the Royal Marines Bands in Yeovil. His last outing with the Orchestra will be to conduct this concert and to introduce his colleague Robert Douglas (Professor of Piano at the Royal Marines School of Music) as soloist in the Piano Concerto no 1 by Beethoven. It was Beethoven himself who first performed this piece over 200 years ago and it is still a great favourite with audiences everywhere!

The concert will begin with another Viennese classic, the popular Overture to ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Johann Strauss Jr. The Strauss family were, of course, famous as composers of waltzes and this overture (in English ‘The Bat’) is full of wonderful tunes from the opera.

Also in the programme is the Symphony no 3 by Robert Schumann - written to express the sights and sounds of life on and beside the river Rhine. Just four years after writing it, Schumann threw himself into the Rhine, apparently in a suicide attempt, but this music comes from a much happier place and is delightful to listen to! Tickets available online from TicketSource or from the Community Centre or Hayling Bookshop. Full price £12, Seniors £10; students £6, children £1.
